| wanting to cry |
[Aug. 1st, 2006|08:25 pm] |
i am sickened beyond anything i thought possible.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14139027/
the chinese government clubbed (yes, CLUBBED) 50,000 dogs to death in three days. this was their solution to a rising rabies problem. while china has long had different views towards dogs in terms of companionship, etc, that doesn't justify what they did. i am by no means an animal activist, a PETA member, or anything of the like, but something like this is absolutely despicable!
if owners were walking their pets, officials would sieze them and club them to death on the spot. at night, officials would walk around making noise to get the dogs to bark, then would proceed to kill them. in what world is this right?!?
i've often found it amazing that in both movies and real life, people have a harder time hearing about the senseless killing of animals over humans. it's never really made sense. but i've come to realize this is because they can't be made to understand why things are happening to them. you can train pets to understand simple things, but you can't explain to them why they have to go through less routine things like surgery (like my cat did when he ate a rock) or let's say being clubbed to death! there is no way to explain to them what's happening and/or why!
i think the worst part of this whole ordeal is the picture at the top of the article - three chinese officials standing around a small dog in the middle of the street, one official mid-club. it's horrible and i am having the hardest time not crying at work right now.
and the worst part?? i'm not even a dog person... |

| | the crappy top 40 stuff on satellite | ] | it's a blah night at the gym. people are annoying me (i.e. don't tell me there are diapers in the locker room and then when i go to clean it up, there aren't any - why lie???) and i can't wait to go home and go to sleep.
i'm done being sick finally, so that's good. accounting job is crazy right now, but in a good way. i'm quickly moving up in everyone's eyes and they're entrusting me to get various projects going and then passing them off to clerks so i can work on new projects. maybe another giant raise soon!! :) that'd be sweet...
i had my first personal training session yesterday w/Cheryl (one of the trainers i work with - cool gal too!) and it kicked my butt!! my shoulders are really sore, but in a good way. now that i'll be meeting with her weekly for at least a month or two hopefully i'll get in the habit of actually using the free membership i get with my employment here!! after all, it's the best gym in the nw suburbs (all the football players come here in the off season, etc) so i might as well take advantage of it!
so another tsunami?? and another war?? seriously, the world may be coming to an end soon... either that or all of the wars going on in different pockets of the world are going to combine into one giant war (world war III, in other words) and pretty much everyone will die that way... either way, not good!!
okay, i'm going to eat my clementine orange and play some games. |

[Jul. 9th, 2006|04:05 pm] |
well, i kind of dropped of the face of the earth for a while, but i'm going to try and update this thing again. no promises though!
i don't even know the last time i updated, so i'll just run through everything that's going on right now.
i moved out of my old apartment about a month ago (no more devil cat or devil roommate!!) and have a one bedroom again. i got a new kitten, Stuart, as a pal for Elliott because he was used to my old roommate's cat. they're slowly getting used to each other, but right now Elliott mostly hates Stuart.
I have two jobs right now: accountant for a manufacturing firm during the day, front desk at a gym nights and weekends - good times! i'm burnt out, but poor... my younger sister may be moving in with me for a few months if she gets a job down here (she just graduated from Wisc/Madison) so that'll give me a little extra rent money... of course the ultimate goal is for Jim to get his shit together so he can move in!! oh well - hopefully in a year or so...
wow - that's actually it for me right now. i'm boring and have no life!
yeah, it might be a while before i'm able to update this again. work is crazy so i have no free time during the day and i don't have internet at home, so wow... i'll try though!
hope everyone's good!!

so yeah, bought one and after showing everyone here at work, i tried it - it completely works!!! and the latte wasn't too bad either! so if ya'll have wolfgang puck brand, try one, simply because it heats itself!!!

life is, well, life. I have to take my life and health insurance exam on the 22nd - have i started studying? of course not! although i'm going to make a schedule to start b/c if i fail this, well, i'll have no job! plus, i'll be licensed to sell life and health insurance in 26 states after i pass it! so that's at least sorta cool...
i start the new job on nov. 1 - so the 28th is my last day at Experian. i'm desperately afraid i'm making the wrong decision, but if you don't take risks, you won't get any return, right? god i'm a finance nerd...
i now officially only have one job, which is probably good. i'll have to do less spending in general, but besides studying for insurance stuff, i have a million things to finish at home in the way of crocheting (a parka for a friend) and whipstitching and embroidering (i'm making cheap fleece blankets for the nieces and nephews - there are too many to buy expensive gifts for!! besides, these are personalized!! everyone say "ooooh" now...) plus, my kitchen is a complete pit right now, so i'm going to have to step up in the cleaning department...
in the meantime, my roommate needs to step up in the paying-her-half-of-the-bills department: she now owes me almost $200 for the last couple of months!! granted, she's already paid 55, but that only brought it down from 250 overall!! i'm poor too!!! grrrrrrrrr...
my cat is being a complete brat and he almost gave himself pneumonia! he sits and cries outside of my bedroom every morning - in fact, that's not true. he used to just whimper. now he completely SCREAMS if i don't let him in after hitting snooze the first time - do they make muzzles for cats? maybe i should invent one... plus, (coming from the whole having-to-let-him-in-in-the-morning thing...) when i'm showering, heaven forbid he's not allowed in the bathroom with me. so what does he do? he sits between the side of the tub and the inner shower curtain, meaning his butt is sticking out into the path of the water along with his tail. well, the tail and rear end of course get soaked, yet he proceeds to stay there (aren't cats supposed to hate water?) and whip me with his wet tail while i'm cleansing... he then won't let me towel him off when i'm done (god forbid he dries quicker!) so then he runs around our fairly cold apartment while drying(we're having issues getting the heat to work - i hate my apartment sometimes...). yes, he has a cold and his nose and eyes are running like crazy! nothing like wiping cat snot off of your cat's face every 10 minutes... and the cherry on top is the fact that he misses me (which is cute except...) because i'm not home all that much but when i am home, he completely ignores me! if i pick him up, he immediately wants to go down. if i'm sitting on the couch, he'll sit on the other end and stare at me. then, if i reach over to pet him, he turns the other way. complete brat!!! oh well - now that i only have one job i'll be home a lot more so maybe he'll simmer down a little... at least he's still better than Larz - although he's been pretty good lately... again, though, jodi is going to be gone this weekend, so we'll see if he actually uses his litter box or her bed... devil cat...
wow - that was quite the rant about my cat... he is still a really good cat in general, so i probably shouldn't complain too much - he just irritated me a lot this weekend.
well, i should probably go grab some lunch and do some work before 5... Jim and i are going to play darts for a while after work (new shafts, flights, and tips!!! :)) and then i'm going to clean tonight...
yay!!!

| [ | mood |
| | i really hate people | ] |
| [ | music |
| | i'm thinking gwar is most appropriate... no gwar? i'm out | ] | okay. here's the deal right now. Katrina pretty much destroyed at least two areas (Biloxi, MS and New Orleans, LA) and did lots of damage in other areas. This is beyond horrible and I still can't believe the pictures I've been seeing of the damage. Truly the worst natural disaster in my life time.
here's the problem.
A lot of people in the NO area didn't evacuate when they were told to. Understandable? yes! I'd hate to leave my home and all of my belongings. and in actuality, Katrina didn't actually hit NO too badly. However, was Lake Pont-a-whatever-you-call-it flooded too much? yes. Did a ton of levees break? yes. is the water un-drinkable? yes. is the entire area now a health hazard? yes! so that means all the people still in the area really need to get out before disease and all that awful stuff starts spreading and adding to the already devastatingly high death toll, right? right. okay.
So we have an area not at all habitable in its current state and the 20% or so of area residents that didn't evacuate when the order was given. You've got 20,000 people camped out at the Superdome which has been damaged extensively itself in the hurricane (i.e. ripped holes, toilets no longer working, no A/C, etc) and they've cleared the Houston Astrodome's schedule for the next 6 months in order to shelter these people. In other words, it makes all the sense in the world for these people to want to get over to the Astrodome asap - they've all been through hell just by losing everything they own, let alone having to live in such awful conditions in a water-surrounded stadium.
given these circumstances, what do these people do?
Start fires around the Superdome and shoot at rescue helicopters and the like!!! what the hell is wrong with this country that makes people feel they have the right to completely disrespect not only the people helping, but in general what is being done to help them?!? and because of this, they have stopped trying to evacuate people altogether! this means everyone has to be stuck for even longer in a place that they should be trying desperately to get out of.
This is an absolute travesty and these people have been an experience I can't even begin to comprehend. But we wonder why the rest of the world hates us and offers us no help when things like this occur (notice how not one other country has offered any aid to us when in the tsunami earlier this year an incredible amount of help was offered throughout the world?) - because we act like we're entitled to this kind of help and service! not one ounce of gratitude.
of course, this isn't everyone that was involved. Again, it's that whole "one person can ruin it for everyone" proverb, but still. The fact that even one person felt the need to use their firearm has forced others to even have their own handy just in case. Absolutely ridiculous.
In the face of such devastation, you hope to see the best come out in people. unfortunately, any good that has come out has again been overshadowed by the ugliness that dwells within a scary number of individuals.
i'm done. |

it all starts on Sept 30 (5 days before the b-day) with the System of a Down (special guest The Mars Volta) concert. Then my b-day on the 5th. Then on the 7th i have the Nine Inch Nails (special guest Queens of the Stone Age) concert. Then on the 16th i have the Vikings/Bears game at Soldier Field. Expensive? yes, and continuing to grow! Because now Foo Fighters and Weezer are coming on the 3rd (2 days before the b-day) and of course I have to go to that as i haven't seen either of them! so yeah... best b-day ever! i also won't be able to spend a single penny for months after!!! although jim said he's saving up to pay for the majority of it (which i won't let him pay for more than his half) so that will help a little...

| | surprisingly, nothing right now | ] | Along with being busy at work, I didn't know my life could be so interesting! I haven't had a free night (or day for that matter) for about two weeks. I'm looking forward to tomorrow night when I get to go home (after a job interview and cat sitting for a friend), do laundry, clean, and read all night. I just started 1776 by David McCullough - so far good. Really interesting from the historical side!! I was rereading the new Harry Potter, but Jim took it from me and I won't get it back until this weekend. It sucks not being able to see him except for Saturday and Monday evenings... Oh well.
Anyway, here's a snapshot of the last however long... I've been playing a ridiculous amount of darts (I even shelled out $50.00 for a really nice set!!) lately. I went to a Coldplay concert in Wisconsin (really good!!), a baseball game (Twins at Sox - Twins win!!!) two days ago, I have another BBall game tonight (Twins at Sox - Santana pitching against Buehrle - should be good!), meeting a friend from high school for lunch in a few minutes (haven't seen him in 5 years!), and I've been baking more than the rest of my life combined over the last week. I baked two kinds of fudge, three loaves of bread (pumpkin, banana, and cinnamon), six kinds of cookies, brownies, lemon bars, apple crumb bars, seven-layer bars, muddy buddies (puppy chow), and a few other things I can't recall right now. Plus, I actually cooked last night. And not just a hamburger helper thing either! I made got some chicken breast and cut that into little pieces. I then added green and red peppers, baby spinach, and broccoli, along with a few different herbs. I then added a little bit of alfredo sauce to blend all of those flavors together. After sauteeing that for a while, I cooked some pasta, poured my chicken sauce over it along with some parmesan cheese and a little more sauce. It was really good!!!
So yeah. I need to get back to work before meeting Tim for lunch. Five years is a long time!!! But it'll be fun. |

| | finally re-bought the new mudvayne :) | ] | okay - i've had an interesting past few days. it all started wed at 4pm when my dad came down to my cube to say goodbye before flying back to minnesota (we work at the same company). he was asking some questions about Jim and i was telling him a story. well, it just so happened that the story took place in the morning and i happened to stick that word in there. my dad of course caught that word and, well, he now knows that kayla isn't a little girl anymore... yeah, that didn't go well. plus, he's going to tell my mom - that also won't go well.
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
that night i got off work early so i picked up jim up and we had a really really good time together that night (i won't go into details, but i'm not just talking about good sex)
the next day was fine until about 6:30. i had picked jim up and we ran to target to get a few things. then on my way home i rear-ended another car. there was no way to avoid it as we were on the highway and they slammed on their breaks, but it's my fault because i was behind. well, i barely scratched the back of this girl's car and we both immediately called our respective insurance companies. unfortunately her brother, being the law-abiding citizen he seems to be, called the cops. as a result, we waited there for an extra hour and a half and i got a ticket and i have to go to court to get my physical license back. i'm not happy. that little punk ruined my perfect driving record. and i have to drive to skokie illinois at the butt-crack of dawn on the 26th for them to call my name, call her name (she already said she wasn't going to show up), realize she's not coming, dropping the lame ticket he wrote for me (following too close), hand my license to the clerk, go pay the court fee (hopefully not more than $100), and give it back to me.
sooooooooooooooooooooooooo not happy.
other than that, though, life is good. next friday is my last shift at stadium (for good this time!!). then that saturday (the 13th) i'm driving to wisconsin to see coldplay. a mere 28 days after that (well, maybe 29 days) football starts (YAY), 19 days after that i get to see the mars volta and system of a down again, and 5 days after that it's my birthday!
so as long as nothing awful happens before then i've got a good few months to look forward to!
now i just have to decide if i want to assume jim and i will still be dating in april so i can get him a plane ticket for whitney and ryan's wedding too... i can't believe i'm even considering anything that far in advance!!! then again, when something's right it's right...

However, there are a few problems with the movie. The second half of the movie truly drags on and on, gets sappy in a not cool way, and was annoying to sit through. However, the first half is so funny that it more than makes up even for the cameo-that-had-potential-but-turned-out-to-really-really-really-really-suck. Plus, there are cute sheep in it!!! (oh sheep sheep sheep sheep sheep sheep sheep sheep sheep sheep sheep sheep sheep sheep sheep sheep sheep sheep sheep sheep!!!!!) i may have a lead on a different job - a friend of mine from Stadium (the sports bar I work at) is a mortgage broker doing very well for himself! however, he used to work for JP Morgan selling insurance. While my dream isn't to sell insurance, it's a base-salary with bonus type of pay (waaaaaaaay better than 100% commission!!) that is much more related to the field I'd like to be in. anyway, he's going to write me a recommendation and work on getting me in there. plus, the office is not even 10 minutes from where i just moved to - which is significantly better than the hour-long traffic-filled hell i get to drive in every morning and night to get to my current less-than-interesting job. seriously - who wants to get mailing lists ready for the post office for a living?!? sooooooooo not cool...
one last thing. yesterday at work i got a new client at about 4:30. cool - i'm a fan of actually having something to do! the client is completely new to the company and they want to run pretty much all of the processing we offer with some interesting twists (and by interesting i mean they're going to give us BOTH consumer and business records instead of just one type or the other... i hate my life) so it's a good opportunity for me to learn some new skills. my sales rep said they needed a quick turnaround so i called the lettershop person right away. she took my email address and said she'd send me the file right away and then we could talk about it. fine - i didn't mind staying late last night because i was meeting a friend for dinner around 6 and i had some time to kill. well, when Marie called at 5:50pm, i still hadn't gotten the email from her! my stapler is a little bitch. I'm trying to staple some things for this job i have coming in and it's just not working. various people stopping by my cube while this is happening have also tried the stapler and it isn't cooperating in the least. okay. so i go to our supply room to see if they have any staplers lying around in there. no, just the one that is supposed to stay in there. well, i borrow that one for now, finish stapling what i need to, and call facilities so i can get a new one. the guy gets here with my new stapler and takes the old one. of course he looks for something to try stapling just to see that it actually doesn't work. you can probably see how this is ending... it works for him! not once, not even twice, but about four or five times!!! so i swear to him it didn't work before, apologize for making him bring me one when i don't need it anymore, i try it once in front of him (it works), and he leaves. i have a little chuckle and shake my head. then i try to staple once more, oh yeah - IT DOESN'T WORK!!!! and now i can't call to request a new one because they'll say "no, you're stupid" - and they'll be right!!! yeah, my stapler is a little bitch. |
